Apple Rumored Preparing a Face ID Overhaul for iPhone 16 Series

It’s only a matter of a few weeks until Apple debuts the upcoming iPhone 16 series during its usual fall event.

According to a recent report from DigiTimes, Apple is preparing to bring notable changes to the iPhone 16’s Face ID mechanism. It cites an original report from The Telegraph that reported in May about Apple’s decision to part ways with Coherent, a supplier from Britain, which has caused a ripple effect. Coherent is now reportedly considering selling its manufacturing facility in the UK.

There's little to know about the exact changes coming to the Face ID mechanism in the iPhone 16 series. It’s believed that Apple could overhaul the Face ID mechanism and make the module much smaller. As a result, it could let Apple shrink the Dynamic Island.

Earlier leaks suggested that the Pro models might come with new sensors under the display, however, industry analysts such as Ross Young refuted these rumors. Young had previously said it wouldn’t arrive until 2025, later he corrected that he anticipates under-screen Face ID by 2026 at least.

That said, how Apple plans to overhaul the Face ID mechanism with the iPhone 16 series remains under wraps. But given that the release is just a few weeks away, we will likely know more about it in the coming weeks.

Until now, CAD renders and other leaks have suggested close-to-no differences between the current iPhone 15 series and the upcoming iPhone 16 series. The only notable differences include slightly bigger screens on the iPhone 16 Pro series and rumors about a new capture button in Pro variants. Hence, it would be interesting to see what Apple has been cooking quietly.
