Actual DOM

The Document Object Model (DOM) is a tree structure that represents the HTML elements of a webpage. When a webpage is loaded, the browser parses the HTML, creates this tree structure, and displays the UI. Every time you make a change (like adding, removing, or updating elements), the browser updates the DOM tree and re-renders the parts that have changed. However, directly manipulating the DOM can be slow, especially with frequent updates, because each change may lead to multiple re-renders and affect the performance.

Virtual DOM

The Virtual DOM is a lightweight copy of the Actual DOM kept in memory by JavaScript. When an element needs to be updated, the Virtual DOM is updated first. The changes are then compared with the Actual DOM, and only the differences (or "diff") are applied to the Actual DOM. This makes updates faster and more efficient because only the specific parts that changed are re-rendered, not the entire DOM.

Analogy: Blueprint vs. Actual Building

Imagine you’re managing a large building renovation project:

Actual Building (Actual DOM): This is the real, physical structure that needs to be modified. Making changes directly to this building (such as tearing down a wall or repainting a room) takes time, labor, and resources.

Blueprint (Virtual DOM): Before making any physical changes, you first update the blueprint or plan of the building. Here, you can experiment with different designs, colors, or structures without actually touching the real building. Once you finalize the changes on the blueprint, you can then implement only the specific updates in the real building.

1. Actual DOM: If you make changes directly here, the browser has to update the whole structure, which can be slow if the webpage is complex.




2. Virtual DOM: Changes are made in this virtual copy. Then, React (or another library) checks for differences between the Virtual DOM and Actual DOM and only applies necessary updates, improving performance.
