I recently found myself in a mess. My amazing Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 4i started hanging. While using the computer, it would just hang sometimes in 10 min , other times in 30 mins etc. When it did, the pointer/cursor wouldnt move, there was no sound from fans too.
This looked spooky . It did not seem like a CPU or RAM issue as there was no sound or blue screen . What can it be ??
- Installed malwarebytes and ran a scan. All good there.
- Scanned windows
- 1. sfc /scannow
- 2. dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
- Cleaned all temporary files.
- Searched for startup apps and disabled all of them.
- Learned about Lenovo commercial vantage -> Hardware scan - good here
- Installed OCCT tool. Ran the 1hr CPU+RAM test . This one showed one crash.
- Installed Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool 64bit - This was fine.
Inspite of all this, laptop kept hanging. There were some WHEA errors, but couldnt figure out the reason from it as the event data was in some code.
In the eventvwr (Event Viewer), I was looking frequently for error and critical messages , so I created a custom filter to help with this. So once the laptop hanged, I would do a hard restart and see this custom filtered logs. It saved time to see the logs that I was most interested in quickly.
I couldnt find any reason for the hanging and I thought of reverting the OS to initial state keeping the data. I chose the option to use the image which was already present in the laptop vs choosing the online OS option.
Followed this by running windows update and after this I did not see any hanging issue. But the laptop fans were whirring away and the laptop was overheating(Solving it in another post).
Additionally got the laptop professionally cleaned for dust and got the thermal paste for it. And finally the laptop is usable.
