Slightly different take on the "which distro" question. I actually hate spending time on customization. I like to go with the default desktop environment, the default file manager, and the default package manager. I keep the desktop background, or else I set a single color background.
I like to spend as little time as possible on setup. I usually just require to do some very simple things. During installation, I need to setup up my local keyboard setup and disable the default one. It must be easy to setup screen resolution and font scaling on first run, single screen. Second, it must be easy to setup wifi. I like a standard bottom left start menu. I like a fairly minimal amount of software preinstalled. And I prefer to use a GUI for most tasks.
After that, I usually just want to start the default browser, or start installing the software of my own choice.
I don't care so much about all the options as long as the distro just keeps out of the way and lets me go on browsing and creating. I must confess I like Mint (but not Ubuntu) a lot out of the box, and I dread installing Arch due to the perceived complexity of it.
I realize this is subjective, but nevertheless: what distros do you think look and work best out of the box?
