The perfectly white, mesmerizing views make it easy to see why some people come to Yakutia on short-term contracts — and end up staying for a lifetime.
This time, the journey ventured even farther into the remote expanses of the Far North — right to the shores of the Arctic Ocean. The plan was to travel from Yakutsk to the village of Tiksi, perched on the edge of the Laptev Sea, and back — a trek spanning roughly 4000 kilometers across Siberia's icy “winter roads” (temporary “roads” – mostly upon frozen rivers!). Snow, ice, “naleds”, more ice and more snow — all the way. Approaching Tiksi, there’s no road – only a general direction charted across the frozen surface of the Laptev Sea!
