About 5 years ago I was enjoying learning computer history. Then I asked my parents to buy some "old computer" to play with. It was a ThinkPad T30. I had been playing with it for like several days and lost any interest. Good laptop, but nowadays it's really outdated, and I didn't have any ideas what to do with this laptop.
In May I switched my "old" ZTE (it was from 2016, IMO it's not too many years ago) to some newer Xiaomi (it's really not so new, but still). When it started lagging on startup in its DE, I realized that using mobile phones is not so convenient. And if you want to use them with comfort, you need to frequently buy new ones.
It was August when I saw ThinkPad again. I really don't remember how it was, but what I can remember is that I started wanting to get some. After some research, I found that a ThinkPad x260 would be enough for me. But as I'm just a schoolchild, I can't afford buying it. Happily, my birthday's in November, so I didn't have to wait much. I asked my parents to buy that laptop, and they agreed.
So, recently I've got it. I installed Gentoo on it at first (using binhost, ofc). You can find my rice there, if you want. Using my ThinkPad X260 was really convenient: even though it's not a brand-new device, it doesn't even lag on startup! Also, it was enough for my daily needs: I started wearing it everywhere. I take it when I go to school, when I go for a walk. Chatting using a keyboard even when you're not at home is amazing, you know.
After using the laptop with that configuration for some weeks, I started to want to switch to some other system. Gentoo is great, but too complicated for me: I can use simpler things. I decided to install OpenBSD. I've seen people using it, so why not? So, after some frustration while installing the system, I make it work. I had problems with understanding the installation of file sets, but it was easy to figure it out.
You know, OpenBSD is a very cozy system. After tweaking, my system has only 16 processes, and I know what each does. In the picture you can see exactly this system installed. Also, I think it's a good idea to avoid X, because I don't really need it: mpv is capable of playing video in framebuffer directly. The question is, how do I use Discord and Telegram in a terminal, but IMO it's not an unfixable issue.
In conclusion, I can say that I like my new ThinkPad very much. It's convenient enough for my experiments and taking it everywhere. Should you get it too? Of course it depends on your needs, but if you need some compact laptop for chatting and web surfing, then I definitely recommend it.
