HP Pavillion all-in-one about 15 years old, was running Win10

I like the idea of using Debian for ease of future updates; although it’s an older machine, it’s my favorite – and this is my main computer for personal use so I need stable, usable OOTB.

What I’ve done so far:

I installed Debian 12 bookworm with KDE Plasma (from netinst.iso) on entire disk

Restart produced two errors; the second one mentioned kernel needing to be installed and after a couple of seconds the computer shut down

Researching the kernel issue was unsuccessful

So I decided to do a dual boot and installed Zorin 17 alongside Debian until I could get Debian running

Zorin install went well, fonts are crisp and clear

Researched the specific errors from Debian install and disabled Secure Boot

Now grub shows both Debian and Zorin, yay!

However . . . the fonts in Debian are blurry, fuzzy . . . pixelated, even in browser -- everywhere

Research indicated it was an issue with KDE, tinkering with settings (antialiasing, hinting, subpixel rendering) didn’t resolve

Decided to try a different DE and using tasksel installed MATE

Font issue is there – and quickly headache inducing

I had created a bootable USB with LMDE to install on a laptop – booting from it on two other (newer) laptops shows no issue with fonts

On the Pavillion, when I boot from the live LMDE USB, the same pixelated font issue

The fonts in the grub menu are fine; the pixelation becomes visible in the lines produced as it’s booting into Debian

So . . . now I have a dual boot with Zorin(ubuntu) and Debian, and because of font/rendering issue Debian is unusable for me. It’s a deal breaker. And I’ve exhausted my troubleshooting/research attempts.

I want to understand what’s causing this font clarity problem before doing anything else.

Is the issue with newer Debian installed on hardware this age? Is dual boot the problem – any linux OS would have the same issue? If LMDE or Debian 12 with KDE Plasma were installed on entire drive, no issues with font clarity?
