As a Computer Science student in the age of AI, I’ve become quite accustomed to tools like ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, and Meta AI. Be it completing programming tasks, writing academic content, designing a presentation, or debugging a spreadsheet formula—these tools have been my go-to companions. I’m completing my work at nearly 2x the speed, and on the surface, life seems sorted.

But is it?

⚠️ The Realization: When a 2-Year-Old Asked Me Something

One afternoon, while I was working, my 2-year-old niece asked me a basic question—something innocent, childlike, and simple. My first instinct?

I copied the question and pasted it into ChatGPT.

That moment hit hard.

Why was I using an AI to answer a toddler’s simple curiosity? That’s when I realized something uncomfortable—I had become dependent, and I wasn’t alone.

🧠 Are We Losing Our Thinking Muscle?

Let’s rewind a bit. Remember the pre-AI era?

We had doubts.

We reached out to books, friends, or mentors.

We struggled, failed, and grew.

Books and friends gave us answers. But it was mentors who helped us think. They gave us clues, frameworks, and paths, not solutions. And those experiences sharpened our minds.

Today, it’s different. Tools like ChatGPT and Copilot don’t just assist—they complete. We don’t learn the solution—we copy it.

Slowly, we’re outsourcing the most human part of the process: critical thinking.

⚙️ The Convenience Trap

AI tools are powerful—let’s not deny it. I use them. You probably do too.

But here’s the trap:

Convenience is addictive.

And like all addictions, it comes with long-term effects:

Diminished problem-solving ability

Reduced memory recall

Lack of originality in thought

Poor debugging and foundational understanding

Over-reliance on AI for even the most basic tasks

It’s like using GPS every time you step outside—you may reach your destination, but you forget how to navigate.

🤔 So, What Are We Really Missing Out On?

In one word? Depth.

We’re missing out on:

The "aha!" moment when you crack the logic on your own.

The grit of debugging your code manually and learning through mistakes.

The connection between concepts you build by thinking, not prompting.

The growth that comes through curiosity, effort, and resilience.

AI can summarize, assist, recommend. But it can’t replace original thought—at least not yet.

🛠️ Where AI Should Fit In

Don’t get me wrong—AI isn’t the enemy.

Here’s a better mindset:

Use AI like a mentor, not like a magician.

Let it:

Give you hints, not full answers.

Review your work, not write it.

Challenge your thoughts, not replace them.

If you’re a student, developer, or creative professional—don’t let AI rob you of the very journey that builds your identity.

Ask yourself before using AI: "Can I try solving this on my own first?"

Even spending 10 honest minutes thinking, researching, or writing on your own before you prompt AI can shift your learning curve drastically.

Yes, ChatGPT, Copilot, and Meta AI are incredible tools.

Yes, they make us faster.

But don’t trade your growth for convenience.
