Is Linux good for school?

I’m interested in learning Linux as I’m studying IT and I’d like to use it as a daily driver in a way as I feel like that is my best way to learn it.

I just have a few questions though. I have a gaming desktop atm with win10. I wouldn’t want to use Linux on there as my main OS because I still play games with friends that aren’t able to be played on Linux such as Valorant, and I have a macbook that I use at school.

So, I was thinking of using it for my homework and school related things by buying an external SSD and booting off of it. It would be like a no distraction environment for school while also being able to learn Linux. Would that be a good idea or is there a better method you’d suggest? Would Arch be too difficult to learn for a beginner? I feel like I would enjoy googling how to setup arch etc while starting from scratch but I do know that I could easily mess up and have to start over again.

Not sure if what I’m saying makes any sense please correct me if I’m wrong lol, just need some recommendations if anyone has some experience. Thank you
