If you are self-hosting n8n and get stuck at the "Set up owner account" screen when accessing it through a domain or subdomain, and you’ve already registered an owner account, this is usually a reverse proxy configuration issue.
Solution
Add the WEBHOOK_URL environment variable to your n8n configuration with your external domain:
If you are using a .env file:
WEBHOOK_URL=https://your-custom-n8n-domain.com
If you’re adding environment variables directly in Docker Compose:

image: docker.n8n.io/n8nio/n8n
environment:
- WEBHOOK_URL=https://your-custom-n8n-domain.com
Note: Replace your-custom-n8n-domain.com with the domain or subdomain you use to access your self-hosted n8n instance.
After updating the WEBHOOK_URL, restart your n8n container and refresh your browser page for the changes to take effect.
