OpenAI Brings Group Chat Feature to ChatGPT Users Worldwide

OpenAI has started rolling out group chats for ChatGPT, and this marks a clear shift in how people interact with the tool. Instead of one user guiding the conversation, multiple people can now take part in the same thread. As a result, discussions feel more natural and less like a fixed back and forth with a single assistant.



At first, OpenAI tested this feature in a few regions. During this phase, the company watched how people used group chats and how the AI fit into shared conversations. Around the same time, Microsoft introduced a similar idea in Copilot, which signaled a growing focus on shared AI spaces. As OpenAI explained, “Early feedback from the pilot has been positive,” which helped push the next step.



The system runs on the GPT-5.1 model and only counts rate limits when ChatGPT replies. Because of this, group members can keep talking freely without worrying about constant limits. ChatGPT also decides when to respond and when to stay silent based on context. If you want its attention, you simply mention its name. In addition, it can react with emojis and even reference profile photos for more personal interactions.



Wider Access After Strong Early Response







After just one week, OpenAI confirmed a broader rollout. The company stated, “We’re expanding group chats to all logged-in users on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans globally over the coming days.” This expansion follows positive early reactions and steady feedback from initial users.



Previously limited to Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan, the feature now reaches a global audience. OpenAI also made it clear that it will keep refining the experience as more people join group conversations. Over time, this approach aims to make ChatGPT feel like a natural part of shared digital discussions, not just a tool waiting for direct commands.
