Public WiFi with freely shared password

ELI5: I've always wondered what the security concerns are at a coffee shop (or any other public space) where they have a password protected WiFi network but they freely hand out the password to anyone. Can another user see your traffic as easily as they could if you were both on an unsecured network? Is it as secured as if you knew the password and the other user did not?
