Claude Hits No. 1 on US App Store After Trump Administration Dispute

AI chatbots now hold the top three spots on the US App Store’s Top Downloaded chart, and Anthropic’s Claude has climbed to No. 1 after sitting at No. 42 just two months ago. OpenAI’s ChatGPT follows at No. 2, while Google’s Gemini ranks close behind, showing how quickly consumer demand for AI assistants has grown in recent weeks.

The sharp rise for Claude did not follow a major feature launch or product redesign. Instead, a public dispute between Anthropic and the US government pushed the company into national headlines and appears to have driven a surge in downloads.



According to Sensor Tower data cited in reports, Claude jumped to the top of Apple’s US free apps chart late Saturday, one day after the Trump administration moved to block government agencies from adopting Anthropic’s technology. On January 30, Claude ranked No. 131 in the US before entering the top 20 throughout February, reflecting steady momentum before the latest spike.



Government Dispute and Public Statements



President Donald Trump criticized Anthropic in a Truth Social post, writing, “The Leftwing nut jobs at Anthropic have made a DISASTROUS MISTAKE trying to STRONG-ARM the Department of War, and force them to obey their Terms of Service instead of our Constitution.”



Department of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote on X that he directed the Department of War to label Anthropic as a “Supply-Chain Risk to National Security.” He added, “Effective immediately, no contractor, supplier, or partner that does business with the United States military may conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic,” while allowing services to continue for up to six months during a transition period.



Anthropic defended its position, stating, “We held to our exceptions for two reasons.” The company said current frontier AI models are not reliable enough for fully autonomous weapons and warned that “mass domestic surveillance of Americans constitutes a violation of fundamental rights.”



Growth in Users and Competition



Anthropic reports that free users have increased by more than 60 percent since January, with daily sign-ups tripling since November and setting new records this week. Paying subscribers have more than doubled this year.



Meanwhile, OpenAI continues to expand its footprint. ChatGPT now counts over 900 million weekly users, and CEO Sam Altman confirmed an agreement with the US Defense Department on deploying its models.



For now, the public debate has translated into visibility for Claude, and that visibility has placed the app at the top of the US download charts.
