Why I Stopped Using Storyboards and Never Looked Back (SwiftUI Changed Everything)

Two years ago, I was an Interface Builder warrior. Storyboards, XIBs, Auto Layout constraints — I knew every trick. I could wire up a complex UI in minutes.

Then I tried SwiftUI. And I realized I'd been fighting the framework instead of building with it.

The Breaking Point

I was working on an app with 15 screens. The storyboard file was 4,000+ lines of XML. Merge conflicts were a nightmare. Every time I opened Xcode, it would freeze for 10 seconds just loading the storyboard.

One day, I rebuilt one screen in SwiftUI. It took 45 minutes. The UIKit version had taken me a full day.

That was the moment.

What SwiftUI Actually Gets Right

1. Declarative > Imperative

In UIKit:

let label = UILabel()
label.text = "Hello"
label.font = .systemFont(ofSize: 16)
label.textColor = .black
label.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
view.addSubview(label)
NSLayoutConstraint.activate([...])

In SwiftUI:

Text("Hello")
    .font(.system(size: 16))
    .foregroundColor(.black)

It's not just less code. It's less cognitive overhead. You describe what you want, not how to get there.

2. Preview is a Game Changer

I used to build, run, navigate to the screen, check the change, go back to code, tweak, repeat. With SwiftUI previews, the feedback loop is instant.

This alone saves me hours per week.

3. State Management That Makes Sense

@State, @Binding, @ObservedObject, @EnvironmentObject — once you understand the mental model, managing UI state becomes straightforward.

No more viewDidLoadviewWillAppearviewDidLayoutSubviews lifecycle gymnastics.

4. Animations Are Trivial

withAnimation(.spring()) {
    isExpanded.toggle()
}

That's it. Try doing the equivalent with UIView.animate and layout constraint changes. I'll wait.

The Honest Downsides

I'm not going to pretend SwiftUI is perfect:

  • Navigation was rough before iOS 16 (NavigationStack fixed most issues)
  • List performance can be tricky with very large datasets
  • Some UIKit components still don't have SwiftUI equivalents
  • Minimum deployment target matters — if you need iOS 14 support, your SwiftUI options are limited

But here's the thing: these issues are shrinking every year. Apple is going all-in on SwiftUI.

My Migration Strategy

I didn't rewrite everything at once. That's a recipe for disaster. Instead:

  1. New features → SwiftUI only
  2. Existing screens → migrate when touching them for bug fixes
  3. Complex UIKit views → wrap in UIViewRepresentable when needed
  4. Share logic → keep ViewModels framework-agnostic

Within 6 months, 80% of my app was SwiftUI. The remaining 20% of UIKit views work fine wrapped.

The Productivity Difference

After fully adopting SwiftUI:

  • UI development time: ~60% faster
  • Bug count in UI layer: down significantly
  • Code reviews: much easier (declarative code is readable)
  • Onboarding new devs: faster (less boilerplate to explain)

Should You Switch?

If you're starting a new project: absolutely yes. There's no reason to start with UIKit in 2026.

If you're maintaining an existing app: migrate gradually. Don't rewrite — evolve.

If you're learning iOS development: start with SwiftUI. You can always learn UIKit later for specific needs.
