AI is already the reason why you can't trust anything on social media... why your RAM upgrade has quadrupled in price, the Steam Machine has been delayed, and GPUs now cost a fortune. And that's before it even gets around to maybe taking your job.
But now AI slop is coming for your gaming graphics too. At least, that's been the reaction of much of the Internet in response to DLSS 5, recently unveiled by NVIDIA at its GPU Technology Conference.
Unlike previous versions of DLSS, which were mostly about upscaling to higher resolutions and generating extra frames for smoother performance, DLSS 5 brings the murky world of generative AI as the latest step towards gaming photorealism. NVIDIA calls it a "blending" of hand-crafted rendering with gen AI. It passes each frame of gameplay -- along with color data and motion vector data to "enhance" each frame with "photoreal lighting and detail."
They call it enhancement, a lot of us are calling it slop -- generative guff running roughshod over the art direction of games, their worlds and their characters, radically altering the visuals. And it's still unclear how much control devs will even have over it.
So is DLSS 5 *the* next revolutionary leap in graphics, or just the latest frontier in the war on AI slop? In this video we're going to dive into why people are so mad, what DLSS 5 is and isn't doing, and where it might all be leading. So let's get straight into it.
