When the Orion spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific earlier this month, it brought home four astronauts and one historic record. But while Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen were the faces of Artemis II, a silent partner was working in the background—one that never sleeps, breathes, or floats.

NASA used Gemini Enterprise agents to support the Artemis II mission. These agents acted as a digital "fifth crew member." This technology helped the crew travel 252,756 miles from Earth.

Astronaut Safety

A Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant (CMO-DA) offered medical advice. It used medical data to help the crew diagnose potential issues using natural language. A predictive biometric system analyzed data from wearable sensors to identify signs of fatigue or cognitive decline.

Real-time Decision Support and Risk Assessment

The AI agents provided real-time support. This included risk assessment and safety categorization.

Workflow Automation

AI agents automated complex data streams. They helped mission controllers by quickly verifying that all systems were ready.

A New Era of Exploration

By using AI, NASA showed that future crews traveling to Mars will have a powerful tool that understands the ship.
