AI agents and non-human identities are increasingly being treated like employees because they also have operational lifecycles.
Agents can be created quickly, assigned permissions, reorganized, and eventually become irrelevant to the business over time.
The governance challenge is what happens afterward.
Unlike employees, AI agents won’t notify anyone when they should lose access. Without formal retirement and deprovisioning processes, organizations risk accumulating inactive agents that still retain permissions, system access, and operational roles.
As companies deploy more autonomous systems, identity governance may become one of the biggest operational challenges in AI security.
Should AI agents eventually be governed with the same rigor as human employees — or will organizations need entirely new identity models for autonomous systems?
