Building a Browser-Based Isometric Illustration Maker for Modern UI Animation Workflows

Creating small SVG illustration assets for UI animations is still more complicated than it should be.

Many teams open heavy design software just to create:

  • simple isometric cubes

  • platform shapes

  • UI scene blocks

  • lightweight SVG assets

  • motion-ready vector illustrations

Tool:

https://uianimation.com/isometric-illustration-maker/

For product designers, frontend developers, and startup teams building modern interfaces, this creates unnecessary friction in the workflow.

To solve this problem, I started building a browser-based tool called the Isometric Illustration Maker for UIAnimation.com.

The goal is simple:

Create a fast, lightweight workflow for drawing and exporting small isometric illustrations directly in the browser.

Why Browser-Based Illustration Tools Matter

Modern product teams are moving toward faster and more collaborative workflows.

In many real production environments:

  • developers work directly with SVG assets

  • motion designers animate vectors in Lottie or Rive

  • product teams iterate quickly on UI concepts

  • startups avoid bloated desktop software for small tasks

But most illustration workflows are still disconnected from development workflows.

The typical process often looks like this:

  1. Open Illustrator or Figma

  2. Create vector artwork

  3. Export SVG manually

  4. Clean SVG output

  5. Re-import into animation tools

  6. Optimize again for production

For small UI assets, this process becomes inefficient very quickly.

The Isometric Illustration Maker is designed to reduce that overhead.

Product Vision

The tool focuses on a specific workflow instead of trying to replace professional illustration software.

Core workflow:

Draw quickly → edit quickly → export SVG/JSON → integrate into product UI or animation systems

The product is designed for:

  • UI animation systems

  • web applications

  • startup landing pages

  • SVG-based product illustrations

  • Lottie animation pipelines

  • Rive workflows

  • frontend prototyping

  • lightweight design systems

Instead of building a massive feature-heavy editor, the goal is to create a focused production tool.

Current Features

The editor currently includes:

Isometric Drawing System

  • Left / Top / Right plane drawing

  • Isometric grid rendering

  • Plane-aware shape generation

  • Cube and platform creation

  • Quick primitive generation

Editing Workflow

  • Mesh editing

  • Multi-point selection

  • Shift multi-select anchor editing

  • Rotation handles

  • Pivot point controls

  • Smoother drag interaction

  • Plane-based transformations

UX Improvements

  • Floating toolbars

  • Immersive canvas mode

  • Space-to-pan navigation

  • Layer management

  • Reference image support

  • Grid snapping and settings

Export System

  • Clean SVG export

  • JSON project export/import

  • Removal of editor overlays from exported SVG

  • Production-ready vector output

Why UX Is Critical for Creative Tools

One major challenge with browser-based creative tools is interaction quality.

Most lightweight editors fail because:

  • mouse interactions feel delayed

  • tools interrupt workflow

  • editing modes become confusing

  • interfaces feel overloaded

A large part of development focused on improving interaction design:

  • smoother mouse rendering

  • calmer visual hierarchy

  • minimal toolbar clutter

  • floating contextual controls

  • larger fullscreen-style isometric grids

The objective is to make the editor feel closer to a focused desktop creative application while remaining lightweight and browser-native.

Real Production Use Cases

This type of tool becomes useful in several production environments.

Startup Landing Pages

Small startups often need:

  • isometric server illustrations

  • dashboard blocks

  • platform visualizations

  • workflow diagrams

Instead of purchasing large illustration packs, teams can quickly generate custom lightweight SVG assets.

Motion Design Pipelines

Motion designers working with:

  • Lottie

  • Rive

  • GSAP

  • Framer Motion

often need small modular vector assets.

The JSON and SVG workflow helps simplify integration into animation systems.

Frontend Development

Developers can export lightweight SVG assets and integrate them directly into component systems.

Example React usage:

import IsometricCube from "./cube.svg";

export default function HeroGraphic() {
return (
<div className="hero-graphic">
<img src={IsometricCube} alt="Isometric Cube" />
</div>
);
}

This becomes especially useful for:

  • React

  • Next.js

  • React Native Web

  • Flutter Web

  • Electron applications

SVG Output Matters More Than Most People Think

One hidden issue in many design workflows is SVG quality.

Poor SVG exports often contain:

  • unnecessary groups

  • hidden layers

  • editor metadata

  • broken transforms

  • excessive paths

For animation systems, this creates performance and compatibility problems.

The editor focuses heavily on generating cleaner SVG structures suitable for:

  • web rendering

  • animation tools

  • frontend frameworks

  • scalable UI systems

This becomes increasingly important in production-scale design systems.

Technical Challenges During Development

Building browser-based vector tooling introduces several engineering problems.

Real-Time Interaction Performance

Dragging anchors, rotating objects, and editing meshes requires careful rendering optimization.

To improve responsiveness:

  • requestAnimationFrame-based rendering was implemented

  • interaction redraws were optimized

  • unnecessary DOM updates were reduced

Isometric Plane Mathematics

Supporting:

  • Left plane

  • Top plane

  • Right plane

requires coordinate transformations that remain intuitive for non-technical users.

The system needed to feel visually correct without exposing mathematical complexity to users.

State Management Complexity

Creative editors contain many simultaneous states:

  • selection state

  • edit state

  • tool state

  • layer state

  • plane state

  • snapping state

Managing these cleanly becomes one of the hardest parts of editor development.

Why Lightweight Creative Software Is Growing

The future of design tooling is increasingly browser-native.

Especially for:

  • collaborative workflows

  • startup teams

  • rapid prototyping

  • animation systems

  • developer-focused tooling

Modern browsers now support enough rendering power to build focused creative experiences without requiring large native applications.

This project is part of that broader movement.

Current Limitations

The editor is still in active beta development.

Areas still being improved include:

  • autosave systems

  • PNG export

  • improved layer UX

  • mobile optimization

  • animation-ready exports

  • smarter snapping

  • reusable asset systems

  • export reliability testing

The goal is not to compete directly with Illustrator or Figma.

The goal is to create a faster workflow for a very specific problem.

Final Thoughts

Many product teams do not need complex illustration software for everyday interface graphics.

They need:

  • speed

  • lightweight workflows

  • production-ready SVG output

  • animation-friendly assets

  • browser-native editing

That is the direction this project is exploring.

The Isometric Illustration Maker is still evolving, but the long-term vision is clear:

build a focused browser-based creative workflow for UI animation and modern web products.

If you work with:

  • UI animation

  • SVG systems

  • motion graphics

  • frontend development

  • creative coding

  • startup product design

feedback and workflow suggestions are always valuable.
