Introduction

Performance is often discussed in terms of Lighthouse scores and Core Web Vitals, but for many users in emerging markets, performance is much more than a technical metric.

In Nigeria, a significant percentage of users access financial applications using mid-range Android devices and unstable mobile networks. Every additional second spent waiting for a dashboard to load can impact trust, engagement, and transaction completion.

While working on a fintech platform, I was tasked with improving the performance of one of our most frequently used customer-facing interfaces. The goal was simple: reduce loading time without sacrificing functionality.

After a series of frontend optimizations, we achieved approximately a 30% reduction in page load time and significantly improved the user experience for customers on slower connections.

This article outlines the approach I used and the lessons learned along the way.

The Problem

The application had gradually accumulated several performance bottlenecks:

1.Large JavaScript bundles loaded on initial render

2.Multiple API requests firing simultaneously

3.Components rendering data that users could not immediately see

4.Heavy dashboard widgets loaded regardless of user activity

5.Repeated data fetching across pages

Although the platform functioned correctly, users on slower networks experienced noticeable delays before they could interact with the interface.

Step 1: Measuring Before Optimizing

Before making any changes, I established a baseline.

I used:

1.Chrome DevTools Performance Panel

2.Lighthouse

3.Network throttling simulations

4.Bundle analysis tools

The goal was to identify actual bottlenecks rather than relying on assumptions.

The analysis revealed that JavaScript execution and unnecessary network requests were contributing more to delays than server response times.

Step 2: Implementing Route-Based Code Splitting

One of the largest improvements came from reducing the amount of JavaScript downloaded on initial load.

Instead of shipping every dashboard component at once, I introduced route-based lazy loading.

const Dashboard = lazy(() => import("./Dashboard"));

This allowed users to download only the code required for the page they were visiting.

Result:

1.Smaller initial bundle size

2.Faster first render

3.Reduced processing time on low-powered devices

Step 3: Deferring Non-Critical Components

Several dashboard sections were not immediately visible when the page loaded.

Instead of rendering everything at once, I deferred secondary components until users scrolled near them.

Examples included:

1.Analytics widgets

2.Transaction insights

3.Promotional banners

4.Historical charts

This significantly reduced the amount of work performed during the critical rendering path.

Step 4: Reducing API Calls

The frontend was making multiple requests for related data.

For example:

1.User Profile

2.Wallet Balance

3.Transaction Summary

4.Rewards Information

These requests often executed separately.

Working with the backend team, we consolidated related data into fewer API responses where appropriate.

Benefits included:

1.Reduced network overhead

2.Lower latency

3.Fewer loading states

4.Improved perceived performance

Step 5: Implementing Smarter Caching

Certain data changed infrequently but was being requested repeatedly.

To address this, I introduced client-side caching strategies and reduced unnecessary refetches.

This prevented duplicate network requests and improved navigation speed across the application.

Step 6: Optimizing Images and Assets

Large assets can become a hidden performance cost.

I optimized:

1.Hero images

2.Dashboard illustrations

3.SVG assets

4.Static resources

Techniques included:

1.Compression

2.Modern image formats

3.Responsive sizing

4.Lazy loading

Even relatively small reductions produced noticeable improvements on slower connections.

Lessons Learned

Several lessons stood out from this project:

  1. Measure Before Optimizing

Data should drive decisions. Performance audits often reveal unexpected bottlenecks.

  1. Perceived Performance Matters

Users care about responsiveness more than technical metrics.

  1. Emerging Markets Require Different Priorities

Optimizing for low-bandwidth conditions can have a larger impact than optimizing for high-end devices.

  1. Frontend Performance Is a Business Problem

Faster experiences improve user satisfaction, engagement, and retention.

Final Thoughts

Building digital products for emerging markets requires balancing functionality with efficiency.
