AI agents can pursue goals, select tools, retain memory across sessions, communicate with other agents, and take actions inside systems without constant human oversight.
Many existing security controls were designed around slowing down or interrupting human behavior. But autonomous agents can operate continuously, retry actions at machine speed, and legitimately use permissions already granted to them. That changes the effectiveness of controls built primarily around friction, such as SMS verification, extra prompts, or rate limits. A growing concern in cybersecurity is whether current defenses truly prevent abuse—or simply make attacks more inconvenient for humans.
The conversation highlights a broader shift from defending against manual attackers to defending against autonomous systems.
Which security controls genuinely stop autonomous abuse, and which ones only depend on slowing people down?
