In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville arrived in Cincinnati, Ohio, and saw something that set America apart.



Looking out over a young city on the banks of the Ohio River, he observed how Americans came together to solve problems. When communities needed schools, hospitals, churches, or other institutions, people formed associations, volunteered their time, raised money, and got to work. Tocqueville believed this spirit of civic engagement was one of the defining strengths of American democracy.
