Apple Reportedly Looking to Buy AI Chip Startups Amid Server Delays

Apple is exploring AI chip acquisitions as it looks for faster ways to improve the servers that power its artificial intelligence features. The company has reportedly spoken with bankers and semiconductor startups about possible deals, which signals growing pressure around its internal AI infrastructure.



Apple looks beyond its current server chips



The Information reports that Apple has approached chip startups to ask whether they would consider selling their businesses. Apple currently uses M2 Ultra chips in some internal AI servers, but those systems have struggled with performance during more demanding workloads.



Apple’s next server chip, known internally as Baltra, has also moved beyond its planned 2026 launch. Until that chip is ready, Apple relies on a mix of its own hardware and Google Cloud systems using Nvidia GPUs for the Gemini-based model behind the new Siri.



The company now appears open to larger deals, including:




Semiconductor startups that can improve AI server performance



Companies that can reduce the size of AI models for iPhones



Chip teams with advanced server and machine learning expertise




Apple usually buys smaller companies, although it has made major purchases before, including Beats and Intel’s smartphone modem business.



The reported talks also come as Apple changes its financial strategy, giving the company more freedom to consider larger acquisitions that support its AI plans.
