Apple’s New iMac Coming This Year, OLED Version Planned

Apple plans to release a new iMac later this year, with development reportedly complete and production preparations moving closer to launch. The update will mark the first iMac refresh in two years, following the current M4 model introduced in October 2024.



Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple has finished work on the new iMac models, which carry the internal codes J833 and J834. The machines are expected to arrive in the fall alongside a wider Mac refresh that includes new MacBook Pro models and other desktop updates.



The next iMac will feature a newer Apple silicon chip, although the exact processor remains unclear. Apple could use the existing M5 chip or move directly to the upcoming M6 chip, depending on the final release schedule and component availability.



No major design changes are expected, so the new model will likely retain the current 24-inch LCD display, slim body, and colorful finish options. Apple is also expected to keep two configurations with different CPU and GPU core counts, port options, and performance levels.



OLED iMac is also in development



Apple is also working on a future iMac with an OLED display, although that model remains further away. OLED technology would bring deeper blacks, stronger contrast, and richer colors compared with the LCD panel used in the current iMac.



The company has not released a larger iMac since discontinuing the 27-inch Intel model in 2022. Rumors about a bigger Apple silicon iMac have continued for years, but Apple has not introduced one.



The current iMac now starts at $1,499 in the United States after Apple raised Mac prices last month.
