AI directories have a simple-looking interface: a search box, categories, and cards. The hard part is not rendering cards. It is building enough trust that buyers use the catalog and founders want to be listed.

I built ToolVerity as an independent directory for discovering and comparing AI tools. The current catalog contains 329 tools, programmatic category and use-case pages, owner claims, and a clearly labeled paid Featured option.

Here are the decisions that mattered most.

1. Separate editorial ranking from payment

A paid placement can increase visibility, but it should never silently change an editorial ranking. Sponsored positions are labeled, while category and comparison pages use the same editorial structure for every product.

This sounds obvious, but directories lose credibility quickly when every “best” result is simply the highest bidder.

2. Give founders a free path first

Every tool owner can request corrections and claim a page without paying. The paid plan comes after that free path.

The sequence is:

  1. Find the existing page.

  2. Claim ownership.

  3. Correct the information.

  4. Optionally choose a labeled Featured placement.

That creates a useful loop: founders improve the catalog, buyers get fresher information, and the commercial offer is attached to a real product page instead of a cold sales pitch.

3. Track intent, not vanity metrics

The admin separates unique visitors, sessions, tool viewers, pricing viewers, checkout intent, Stripe sessions, and completed purchases.

A visitor is represented by a random first-party browser identifier rather than an IP address. That makes it possible to distinguish repeated page views from additional people without building cross-site tracking.

The important denominator is not “impressions.” It is how many qualified visitors move from a tool or comparison page to pricing and checkout.

4. Programmatic SEO still needs useful pages

Generating hundreds of URLs is easy. Making them worth indexing is harder.

Each ToolVerity page needs a specific search intent, visible comparisons, internal links, metadata, structured data, and a reason to exist beyond swapping a keyword in the title. Thin pages would only create more crawlable noise.

5. Distribution is part of the product

The most important launch lesson was that a working product does not create distribution automatically.

The next phase is earning discovery through founder communities, useful technical write-ups, software marketplaces, Product Hunt, and search. Each channel receives its own tracking parameters so the admin can connect actions to qualified visits and purchases.

Stack

  • Next.js

  • Supabase

  • Stripe Checkout and webhooks

  • Vercel

  • First-party event attribution

The directory is live at ToolVerity.

I would especially value feedback on two questions:

  • What evidence makes you trust a software directory?

  • If you own an AI product, what would make claiming its page worthwhile?
