Disney+ and Paramount+ Explore Free Streaming Tiers to Challenge YouTube

Disney+ and Paramount+ are exploring free streaming tiers as Hollywood looks for new ways to compete with YouTube, attract larger audiences, and increase advertising revenue. Netflix has also left the door open to a free option in selected markets, which suggests that major streaming companies are rethinking how they bring new viewers into their services.



Business Insider reports that Disney and Paramount Skydance are considering broader free access to movies and shows inside their streaming apps. The companies want to reduce the barrier created by subscription paywalls and give viewers a reason to use their platforms before asking them to pay.



Disney has reportedly discussed adding free content to Disney+, which would help the company reach people who do not currently subscribe. Once those viewers start using the app regularly, Disney could promote paid plans, premium releases, and other subscription benefits directly inside the service.



Paramount+ is considering a similar approach, with plans to expand the amount of content available without a subscription. The company could use free movies and shows to attract new users while generating more revenue through advertising.



Netflix Is Also Considering Free Access



Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters recently said that a free offering could make sense in some markets outside the United States. Netflix has not announced a formal plan, but the comment shows that the company is watching how free streaming models develop.



YouTube remains a major reason behind this shift because it offers free entertainment at a huge scale and keeps users watching through advertising. Disney+, Paramount+, and Netflix now appear ready to test whether free access can help them increase engagement while still converting regular viewers into paying subscribers.
