Apple RAM supplier SK Hynix makes a $38B bet on AI chip boom

SK Hynix just approved a massive $38.3 billion investment to build two new semiconductor fabrication plants in South Korea. As a major memory supplier for Apple, the company is making this huge financial bet to keep up with the explosive demand driven by the artificial intelligence boom. This major expansion aims to boost production of critical memory chips, but regular consumers should not expect cheaper devices anytime soon. SK Hynix will spend about $24.9 billion on a new fabrication plant in Yongin to produce high-bandwidth memory and next-generation DRAM products. The remaining $13.2 billion will fund a separate facility in Cheongju dedicated to manufacturing NAND storage chips. Construction for these sites will kick off next year. The company expects to finish building and open its first cleanrooms between late 2028 and June 2029.
