So, I wrote a terminal file manager based on an old DOS application.

In April this year, I started learning to code in C, which was a major step up from the occasional Python scripts I had been writing. The reason for doing so was that I wanted to port an old DOS set of applications my father had used in the 80s and 90s called DF-EDIT, which I was then later introduced to when we got the family PC in the early 90s, to Linux. (Apparently DF-EDIT was mildly popular within the Texas Instruments offices due to the original author, Larry Kroeker, having worked there during the time he wrote it).

Fast forward to the mid 2000s, after I'd moved to using Linux as my primary system. The extended amounts of time I was finding myself in the terminal made me remember how useful the applications of DF-EDIT were (especially the Show application). As I had no experience with coding outside of BASIC, I never really knew how to get the a project like that off the ground.

About 10 years went past, and after writing many scripts and learning a bit of Python, I decided it would be a good time to look at C, and what better challenge to recreate DF-EDIT for Unix-like systems as my first challenge starting with the Show application. So after 6 months, I've come up with the following, dubbed DF-SHOW:
