Linux desktop adoption may be less about a single breakthrough year and more about gradual, incremental growth. The same pattern could extend into televisions and other devices.

One argument is that people don't necessarily move to Linux because they suddenly discover it. They move because frustration with Microsoft or Apple eventually pushes them to try something different—and then they discover that Linux works well for them.

That makes Linux's biggest advantage partly dependent on the competition's mistakes.
