Windows drivers can operate with powerful system privileges. Threat actors may abuse legitimate but vulnerable drivers already present on a system or bring in signed drivers with capabilities that help them circumvent security protections.

Because drivers operate at a privileged level, malicious use can undermine endpoint detection and response (EDR) defenses. This makes driver abuse an important consideration for defenders monitoring suspicious activity and investigating potential compromises.

UEFI exploitation represents a different, deeper attack surface, potentially allowing code execution before the operating system's boot process advances to the bootloader.

How should defenders balance trusting signed drivers with detecting the abuse of privileged components?
