When ever I discuss the news of a big password breach with a particular friend, he always says to me, "So if a hacker gets my passwords what bad things could 'really' happen to me?"
He then tells me that he has spoken to the mutual fund company where most of his assets are, and they tell him that even if someone logged into his account, it would be almost impossible for them to transfer money to themselves.
I then tell him they might be able to access his Amazon or eBay account, and I recount the story of my Wordpress blog being rendered inaccessible to me, likely by a hacker.
My question is, what is a real life example of how someone suffered financially or otherwise by having their password and user name revealed in a data breach?
Note: I am a big believer in using unique passwords via a password manager.
