Hey everyone, long time listener first time caller.
I’m two classes into a masters in infosec. So far we’ve just been writing long papers that are essentially buzzwords about “interfacing with upper management, employee awareness programs, the importance of OPSEC” etc. It’s all pretty good jargon to know, but I’m not learning any technical skills.
My dream job is to be a red team/pen tester and be in the trenches more than the management side. I don’t mind being at the bottom of the totem pole if it means I get to do my job all the time (as opposed to managing meetings and talking to lawyers, etc). I have some amateurish experience with Kali Linux but all script kiddie stuff, no real experience in the field.
My employer has a program where they set aside professional dev funds for certifications like the OSCP, which I’m liking more and more as I read about it. So my question is whether I should pause the masters degree and rack up three or four OSCP certs, then try to get a job as a pen tester, or stay the course, complete the degree, and get the certs later after I land an actual job in infosec.
Any advice is much appreciated!
