Boxcryptor/Cryptomator Comparison

Hi,

I just evaluated Boxcryptor (BC) and Cryptomator (CM) for my own use and thought readers here might be interested. Here's what I found:

* CM uses the Veracrypt file system model, i.e. decrypted versions of files are accessible via a separate drive. BC creates a new drive too, but it includes both encrypted and decrypted files. I found BC confusing and like the CM method better.

* CM is simple, spare, elegant, and intuitive. BC Is much more powerful and has a lot of additional features that may be useful to you but make it more challenging to understand. If you need the features then BC is clearly better. If not then CM may be a better choice.

* CM has spare documentation that doesn't include everything it should. Very little description of options: it takes research to figure them out. BC has excellent documentation that explains everything.

* CM does not require a CM online account. BC does.

* The CM windows installer does not inspire confidence. Windows Defender wanted to block it. Installation of Dokan File Library is optional in the installation process but in fact it must be installed. Complained that I didn't have correct MS C++ Run Time Library and told me to install it myself. The CM Android installation was simple and problem-free. The BC Windows installation was flawless. Never installed BC on Android.

* Overall impression of CM is that it's a well-implemented but unprofessional product. With BC the impression is that it's competent, slick, and professional. This is considering the apps themselves, feature sets, installers, web sites, documentation, and general look and feel of everything.

* CM is open source, BC isn't.

* When I had a question someone on the CM forum replied competently and helpfully the next day. I never tried BC's support but would expect it to be good to excellent.

I ended up using CM. I liked the Veracrypt file system model, didn't need BC's extra features, and didn't want to expend the time to understand them. For me that overwhelmed the considerable benefits of BC's overall professionalism.
