For the longest time, Electronic Arts and FIFA managed to corral the rights to all of the significant football championships in the world. It left Konami and its PES sim to settle for inventing names and players that resembled the reality.
What’s surprising is that even without all of those official licenses, PES managed to hang on and gather a following. Not to mention the fact that the game innovates with each new release, pushing EA to do the same with FIFA. It turns out that having the official player’s name and teams is not as important as some might think.
