Question for the community -- can you still be effective in this field if you're disengaged? I've been dedicated infosec for over half a decade, I have a CISSP and GSEC, I've built up some solid industry contacts, but I've largely lost my interest in infosec, and at this point I'm primarily hanging in because I have these certs, experience, and golden handcuffs to contend with.
I feel like there are a lot of other careers out there where people can just check out but still get the job done (accounting, HR, logistics, manufacturing, etc.) by simply going through the motions professionally (and perhaps funding fulfillment elsewhere completely outside the field) but it seems with infosec that it's a field by and large stuffed with people who are generally highly engaged (i.e. they live and breathe security, love conferences and technology, etc.) So am I alone in not really caring for what I do? On the one hand, I will readily admit that it impacts my job performance inwardly (both how I view what I do, and how engaged I am when issues arise), but on the other hand, externally no one seems to care too much -- I get pretty solid yearly reviews, people come to me with things, and I haven't had trouble moving through the field.
I just don't care about infosec anymore. I don't care about the latest EPP platform. I don't care about whatever the bad guys are doing this week. I don't care about developments in the cloud, or AI, or ML, or whatever is in the latest Kali distro. I feel like this field has largely become an overinflated joke, and little more than a cash-rich playground for flavor-of-the-week vendors to pitch yet another "revolutionary" product designed to do little more than take infosec leadership eyes off the actual important-things ball. I think I'm probably burnt out, but I make good money, carry the benefits, and work for a great company with solid benefits and work environment, and so I can't really afford to change fields or take a sabbatical.
Any input from others out there who are maybe just bobbing along? Do you see yourself hanging on in this field, or do you have interests in going elsewhere? (and if so, what are you thinking of doing?)
