Does resetting our emails password help prevent hacks?

so i see every so often that someones Gmail gets hacked or their facebook gets hacked and the hacker sends out spam or porn or trojans or something, i was wondering if changing your passwords frequently actually helped with that or if they typically gain access to your account through other means that a password change would not affect?
