A bit of background: I'm a low-level guy with a few years of experience working on embedded systems, as well as x86 desktop applications and drivers.
Lately I've started playing binary exploitation and reverse engineering CTFs. These are a lot of fun, and I enjoy this kind of stuff way more than spending countless hours wrangling poorly-written OO code. However, I have a feeling that this kind of stuff won't get me anywhere unless I full-on switch to a security research career, which means less job prospects and basically throwing away all my previous experience on software development. Even if I did that, I understand there's not much room for binary analysis work in the market; nowadays most of the focus is on web stuff, which I couldn't care less about. Hell, I had enough trouble finding a developer job that doesn't involve JavaScript or C#.
My question is, will getting into binary exploitation, reverse engineering, etc. be a waste of time when looking for a new job?
