SSH encryption itself isn't being cracked. The issue discussed here is a compression side-channel attack involving multiplexed SSH channels and a shared compression context.

By observing how compressed data changes in size, an attacker may be able to infer information about the underlying plaintext. That makes compression behavior relevant to SSH security even when the encryption remains intact.

The research paper behind the technique is Crossing the Streams: SSH Plaintext Recovery via a Common Compression Context in Multiplexed Channels—and, yes, it's apparently “light reading.”

When does a performance feature like compression become a security liability?
