A financial calculator is only as good as its formula

Online financial calculators have a trust problem. You type in your numbers, a monthly payment appears, and you have no idea what math produced it. Was that mortgage calc using monthly or semi-annual compounding? Does the tax calculator include state tax? Which year's brackets? Usually, you can't tell — the formula is hidden.
