Not all multifactor authentication methods offer the same protection. Passkeys and hardware security keys can resist phishing attacks that relay credentials and authentication prompts. Other methods, including some device-code authentication flows, carry different risks.

Enabling MFA is only one part of identity security. If users can fall back to weaker authentication methods, an organization's strongest option may not provide consistent protection. Security teams should evaluate which methods are permitted, enforce phishing-resistant authentication where appropriate, and monitor sessions after login for suspicious activity or account changes.

Authentication policy and post-login monitoring need to work together.

How should organizations balance convenient authentication choices with enforcing the strongest practical protection?
