Google and its partners reportedly dismantled the XCPE malware botnet, which involved more than 1.3 million Android TV streaming devices. Google alleged that devices were intentionally infected with malware and equipped with persistent backdoors.

Compromised consumer devices can become valuable resources for cybercriminals. According to the allegations, access to infected devices was sold to criminal affiliates who used them for ad fraud, proxy services, and other malicious operations.

The danger isn't limited to computers and smartphones. Everyday connected devices can become part of a much larger criminal infrastructure.

How much do consumers really know about the security of the streaming devices connected to their networks?
