Hello, I do have very odd scenario for me that I never had chance to learn nor get any experience on.
I do need to set full Bare Metal backup of OS and it's components and files.
In current times of virtualization I would go for Snapshoot with full RAM dump as well but this time it is classic way.
Setup:
- I do have several bare metal hosts running various tasks per server (6 Kubernetes hosts running CEPH as well, 1 Mail Server, and few other as Load Balancers and Storage Boxes), all running Ubuntu.
- Hosts do not have spare drives for local DD nor option to install them, all physical disks are set as software RAID1
- I had sees someone in the past tried to setup ReaR on them but it was only set for some random directories
Problem:
- Need to provide full machine restore in case of System Maintenance Failure (OS or core service)
- Need to provide partial backup of important directories (configurations and content) - this one is not that hard so we can skip it in this case
- All backup do need to be done without putting server and whatever is doing offline so on live server
What I do look for?
- What in your experience would be best tool for making such backup?
Last time I had done such backup like in 2008 and I bet technology and tools move forward since that time, but since I had jumped on VMs and hypervisors I never had such need for that low level backups
