Mesothelioma and Non Asbestos Exposure



Most commonly, mesothelioma develops on the lung linings as well as the abdomen. This rare cancer also can form in the heart's lining (pericardium) or in the testes.



Asbestos is the main risk factor for mesothelioma. However, some patients diagnosed with mesothelioma may not have a history of asbestos exposure.



Exposure to Asbestos



Asbestos, which is a mineral that is of natural origin was used in the past for construction and industrial products all over the globe. People who worked in asbestos-related industries handled the material every day, putting them at risk of exposure. Asbestos fibers can get into the lungs and cause lung diseases. This is known as asbestosis. Over time, these trapped fibers can cause mesothelioma. Asbestos is also inhaled or ingested and the risk of developing mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases rises with the amount and length of exposure.



Most cases of mesothelioma are caused by occupational exposure. Asbestos was employed in a variety of trades, such as construction, insulation and electrical work, as well as automobile maintenance and pipefitting. It is evident that asbestos exposure is the most significant risk factor for mesothelioma.



Genetics



Mesothelioma is an uncommon disease caused by malignant mesothelial cells which develop out of control and invade surrounding tissues. It can also spread throughout the body traveling through the bloodstream or lymphatic system and impacting other organs. Asbestos is the most common reason, but it's not the only cause. Other genetic and environmental factors can cause the disease.
