The benchmarks of the M4 Macbooks and Mac Minis are coming out and without exaggeration they are absolutely trashing the performance of Intel and AMD x86 desktop, I repeat, desktop counterparts. Some argue that if the trend continues like this, there's nothing that Intel and AMD will be able to do to in few years time to compete on the same level of performance per watt as ARM chips continue to close the raw performance gap, and we risk seeing x86 falling into irrelevancy rather soon. If that happens, is Linux kernel and Linux distros going to be prepared for it? Microsoft with its deep pockets has been hard at work porting Windows on ARM but it still has growing pains. Drivers for Linux are obviously a concern. I wonder if we will continue to be able to use our Linux distros with minimal disruption or if there's a lot of stuff that will have to be left behind / created from scratch.
