hkml: Mailing Tool for Simple Linux Kernel Development - SeongJae (SJ) Park, Meta

Linux kernel development is driven by mails. It is challenging to read and manage mails that are flooding everyday. Sending a patch as a mail is relatively easy. Replying to comments or questions to your patch is unbelievably difficult and cumbersome for beginners and even professional developers. hkml is a CLI tool developed by the Linux kernel DAMON subsystem maintainer, to help such mails-driven development tasks for general mails driven development projects and later been optimized for DAMON and Linux kernel projects.

This session will introduce the Linux kernel development process in general, and why it is challenging. After that, the speaker will introduce how the challenging works can simply be done using hkml, with live demonstrations. The hkml introduction will cover nearly every kernel development tasks, including how to read mails of interest, send replies to others, formatting and sending patches with automatic receiver setup and checkers of common mistakes, and reviewing patches that are posted by others.
