ZoneMinder vs Shinobi: Which NVR to Self-Host?

📑 Inhaltsübersicht

Quick Verdict

ZoneMinder is the better choice for most self-hosters. It's more mature, better documented, has a larger community, and handles large camera deployments reliably. Shinobi has a more modern UI and is easier to set up with Docker, but its development pace has slowed and the documentation is sparse.

Overview

ZoneMinder is one of the oldest open-source NVR systems, first released in 2002. It's written in Perl/C++ with a PHP web interface, runs on Linux, and supports virtually any IP camera via RTSP or MJPEG. It's battle-tested in deployments with dozens of cameras and has been the default self-hosted NVR for over two decades.

Shinobi is a Node.js-based NVR that launched around 2017 as a modern alternative to ZoneMinder. It has a cleaner web UI, WebSocket-based live streaming, and a plugin system for motion detection and object recognition. Development is led by a single developer (Moe) and hosted on GitLab.

Feature Comparison

Feature ZoneMinder Shinobi
Language Perl/C++/PHP Node.js
License GPL-2.0 Custom (free for personal use)
Docker Support Official image available Official Docker setup
Web UI Functional but dated Modern, responsive
Live Streaming MJPEG, ZMS WebSocket, HLS, MJPEG
Recording Modes Continuous, modect, mocord, nodect Continuous, motion, watch-only
Motion Detection Built-in (zone-based) Plugin-based
AI Object Detection Via zmeventnotification + YOLO Via plugin (TensorFlow, YOLO)
Multi-user Yes (built-in auth) Yes (multi-tenant capable)
API REST API REST API + WebSocket
Mobile App Third-party (zmNinja) Web UI (mobile-responsive)
Camera Protocol RTSP, MJPEG, file-based RTSP, MJPEG, HLS, ONVIF
Active Development Active (regular releases) Slow (commits sporadic)

Installation Complexity

ZoneMinder traditionally required manual installation on Ubuntu/Debian with MySQL and Apache/Nginx configuration. The Docker image has simplified this, but initial configuration still involves navigating the web UI to add cameras, set function modes (Monitor, Modect, Record, Mocord, Nodect), and configure zones for motion detection. The learning curve is moderate — the UI has many options.

Shinobi is more Docker-friendly. The official setup uses a shell script that generates a docker-compose.yml with MariaDB. Camera configuration happens entirely through the web UI, which is more intuitive than ZoneMinder's. However, Shinobi's documentation is thin — you'll rely on community guides and the project wiki for advanced configuration.

For a basic Docker setup, Shinobi is faster to get running. For a production deployment with fine-tuned motion detection, ZoneMinder's maturity and documentation win.

Performance and Resource Usage

Metric ZoneMinder Shinobi
RAM (5 cameras) 1-2 GB 1-2 GB
RAM (20 cameras) 4-6 GB 3-5 GB
CPU Usage Moderate (Perl + FFmpeg) Moderate (Node.js + FFmpeg)
Disk I/O Heavy (writes to MySQL + disk) Moderate (writes to disk)
GPU Acceleration Limited (via FFmpeg) Limited (via FFmpeg)
Shared Memory Requires large /dev/shm Not required

ZoneMinder uses shared memory (/dev/shm) for inter-process communication between capture and analysis daemons. This means you need to allocate sufficient shared memory — typically 50-100 MB per camera. Shinobi doesn't have this requirement since Node.js handles everything in-process.

Both rely on FFmpeg for video processing and are similar in CPU usage. Neither has the purpose-built AI acceleration that Frigate offers with Coral TPU support.

Community and Support

ZoneMinder has a large, established community. The official forums have thousands of posts, the documentation wiki is comprehensive (though sometimes dated), and there's an active community on the ZoneMinder Slack. With 5,000+ GitHub stars and regular releases (v1.38.1 is the latest stable), the project has proven longevity.

Shinobi has a smaller community. The GitLab repo has moderate activity, there's a Discord server, and the developer posts YouTube tutorials. However, the project is essentially a one-person operation. GitLab releases haven't been updated since 2018 (the project uses rolling releases instead), which makes version tracking difficult.

ZoneMinder wins on community size and long-term reliability. Shinobi's smaller community means fewer tutorials, fewer people to help troubleshoot, and higher bus-factor risk.

Use Cases

Choose ZoneMinder If...

  • You need a proven, battle-tested NVR

  • You're deploying 10+ cameras and need reliability

  • You want extensive documentation and community support

  • You need fine-grained motion detection zones

  • You plan to integrate AI detection via zmeventnotification

  • Long-term project viability matters to you

Choose Shinobi If...

  • You prefer a modern, cleaner web interface

  • You need multi-tenant support (multiple users with separate cameras)

  • You want WebSocket-based live streaming

  • You're running a small deployment (1-5 cameras)

  • You want a simpler Docker setup experience

  • You need ONVIF camera auto-discovery

Final Verdict

ZoneMinder is the safer choice for most self-hosted NVR deployments. Its 20+ year track record, active development with regular releases, comprehensive documentation, and large community make it the more reliable option. The UI is dated, but it works and it's well-documented.

Shinobi has a better UI and is easier to deploy initially, but its uncertain development trajectory and thin documentation make it harder to recommend for anything beyond a small home setup. If you're choosing between these two, go with ZoneMinder.

That said, if you're starting fresh in 2026, consider
