WhatsApp Brings Native CarPlay App with Chats, Calls, and Favorites

WhatsApp is testing a native CarPlay app for iPhone users, and this update finally brings a proper interface to the car display instead of relying only on Siri voice commands. The new experience lets users view recent chats, access contacts, and start messages or calls directly from the dashboard while keeping interactions simple and controlled for safer driving.



WABetaInfo reports that the feature is now available to iOS beta testers through TestFlight, where users can try a redesigned WhatsApp interface built specifically for CarPlay.

A proper WhatsApp interface on CarPlay

















Until now, WhatsApp on CarPlay depended entirely on Siri, which meant users could only listen to messages and reply using voice, but they could not browse chats or pick contacts visually. With this update, WhatsApp adds a structured interface that includes light and dark modes and focuses on core features without exposing full conversations.







The app opens with a chat list screen that shows recent conversations from the past few weeks, usually covering around 20 to 25 days of activity. Users can identify contacts quickly, check timestamps, and see unread messages marked with a blue dot, but they cannot open full chat threads, which helps reduce distraction while driving.



Features that improve usability



The new CarPlay app introduces a few focused tabs that simplify access without overwhelming the driver:




Chat list: View recent conversations and send messages directly



Call history: Check incoming, outgoing, and missed calls with timestamps



Favorites tab: Reach frequently contacted people faster



New message option: Contact anyone outside the recent list




Users can also tap on a contact to view basic profile details and choose whether to send a message or start a call from that screen.



Limited access keeps safety in focus



WhatsApp restricts full chat access on purpose, and that decision keeps the interface aligned with driving safety expectations while still offering enough control to manage conversations quickly. The app focuses on short interactions, and users can always return to their iPhone later for complete chat history.



The CarPlay app remains in beta testing through TestFlight, and WhatsApp plans a wider release once the feature becomes stable, which means more users will soon get a more complete messaging experience inside their car.
