Hello, I posted this on the cybersecurity reddit, but I suspect they might be more biased towards certain roles so I thought I'd post here where there's going to be a high concentration of people working in more niche roles.
I have an opportunity to be upskilled to a few roles in exchange for being locked into the job for a few years. I was wondering out of these 4 jobs, which one do you think would have an easier transition to the private sector?
- Cyber Intelligence Analyst
- Probably the most generalist out of these 4
- Inspects computer networks
- Reverse engineers malware and applications
- Job description says knowledge of red teaming, blue teaming and purple teaming
- Writes a lot of reports, some technical, some on people
- Developer
- Researches operating systems to find ways to hide malware from being detected
- Writes malware and rootkits
- Has deep insight to kernels from a security perspective and regularly does kernel & system programming
- Has some knowledge of how exploits work, but job is definitely not to do vulnerability research & exploit development
- Doesn't really have the general cybersecurity knowledge of the analyst or operator
- Some reverse engineering knowledge when debugging undocumented kernel functions, but not really as deep as someone who is dedicated to reverse engineering and VR
- Operator
- A generalist in terms of security knowledge like the analyst, but is more focused on the execution of cyber operations
- Focus is on targeting machines and devices, and little intelligence analysis of the people being targeted themselves
- Has deep networking knowledge and red teaming
- Little knowledge of vulnerability research and exploit development besides knowing how to leverage premade capabilities in cyber operations
- Spends a lot of time planning operations, and requesting what kind of capabilities are needed from the developers and researchers
- Vulnerability Researcher
- Focused on discovering vulnerabilities and exploiting vulnerabilities that are discovered
- Probably the most skilled at reverse engineering out of the 4 jobs as virtue of doing vulnerability research full time
- Not really as adept at general cyber security concepts compared to the analyst and operator since they mostly work on a few niche technologies for longer stretches of time
- Not really as knowledgeable about malware and kernel internals as the developer. And since they are mostly focused on vulnerabilities and initial access, coding is not going of the same quality or maintainability as the developer
