Many hardware devices ship with small firmware components called option ROMs that help UEFI initialize hardware during the boot process.
These aren’t traditional operating system drivers. They run earlier, inside firmware, and help systems communicate with components like network cards before the OS loads.
That means modern computers often trust hardware-supplied code automatically during startup. Most users — and even many technical professionals — rarely think about how much happens before endpoint security tools or operating systems become active.
The deeper systems become layered with firmware dependencies, the harder visibility and trust become.
