The Bug Usually Starts Before the Error

I have been posting Scarab Diagnostic Suite field tests here on DEV: real issues, real repos, real patches, real diagnostic pressure.

But the deeper pattern behind the series is becoming clearer.

The bug is rarely just where the symptom appears.

The symptom is what we notice first:

  • the process hangs

  • the source map lies

  • the auto-import is wrong

  • the compiler output behaves differently

  • the test passes but the runtime fails

  • the app “works” but the repo gets harder to trust

But in a lot of the field tests, the useful question has not been:

Where is the broken line?

It has been:

Where did the system stop preserving the truth another part of the system depended on?

That is the diagnostic frame Scarab is built around.

A config crosses into runtime behavior.

A compiler transforms source into output.

A source map claims to represent original source.

A cache claims to represent stored state.

A test claims to prove behavior.

A language service claims an import path is valid.

A stream abstraction claims cancellation means the underlying resource is done.

An editor claims browser input geometry matches what the user sees.

Those are all boundaries.

And boundaries are where software tells the truth.

When those boundaries hold, the system is easier to reason about.

When they break, the actual failure may show up somewhere else entirely.

That is why a patch can be narrow and still matter.

A narrow patch does not mean the problem was small.

It often means the right boundary was found.

A broad patch can sometimes mean the opposite: the symptom was visible, but the failed boundary was still unclear, so the repair starts wandering through nearby code.

This is also why AI-assisted coding needs more than better prompts or bigger context windows.

An AI agent can write code quickly.

But after the agent is done, the repo still has to prove that the code respects its own boundaries.

Did the test prove the contract, or just the patch?

Did the runtime behavior become a workaround?

Did the docs drift from implementation?

Did generated output become treated as source truth?

Did the repair fix the symptom while moving the contradiction somewhere else?

That is the layer I think matters.

Not just faster coding.

Repo-local diagnostics that can say:

this boundary broke, this is the evidence, this is the repair lane, and this is what must be proven afterward.

The field tests are the proof trail.

The larger theory is what I wrote about on Substack:

Scarab’s field tests are pointing toward a larger theory of software failure: systems break when ownership, authority, and truth stop lining up across boundaries.
