I thought formatting JSON solved everything.



Whenever I received an API response, I would paste it into a formatter and instantly make it readable.



For small responses, that worked perfectly.



Then one day I received a huge API response containing user data, permissions, subscriptions, devices, settings, and analytics information.



The response expanded into hundreds of lines after formatting.



That's when I realized something important:



Readability and navigation are not the same thing.



The JSON was perfectly formatted.



I could read every field.



But finding a specific value still meant scrolling endlessly through hundreds of lines.



Formatting Helps — But Only Up To A Point



A formatter transforms unreadable JSON into structured data.



Instead of one giant line, objects and arrays become easy to identify.



Nested structures become visible.



Relationships between fields become clearer.



For most responses, this is enough.



But once JSON becomes large, a new problem appears.



You stop asking:



"Is this readable?"



and start asking:



"Where is the field I'm looking for?"



That's a completely different challenge.



The Problem Nobody Talks About



Imagine searching for:




  • A specific user ID

  • One permission inside a list of 200 permissions

  • A deeply nested configuration value

  • A failed API response hidden inside a large payload



Even perfectly formatted JSON can become difficult to navigate.



The larger the response becomes, the more time gets wasted scrolling.



Developers often blame the data.



The real problem is usually the tool.

Most online JSON formatters did one thing well:



They formatted JSON.



But they didn't help much after that.



I wanted something more useful.

The goal wasn't just another JSON formatter.



The goal was to create a workspace where developers could:




  1. Format JSON

  2. Validate JSON

  3. Detect syntax errors

  4. Find exact line and column numbers

  5. Minify JSON

  6. Explore JSON structures more efficiently



Instead of jumping between multiple websites, everything could be done in a single place.



The Next Challenge: Navigation



After formatting and validation, the next problem becomes navigation.



That's where features like JSON Tree Viewers become valuable.

Focus on specific branches

Understand structure faster



Instead of scrolling through hundreds of lines, you navigate the data logically.

What I Learned



Building developer tools taught me something simple:



The first problem is rarely the real problem.



I thought developers needed better JSON formatting.



What they actually needed was a better way to understand and navigate JSON.



Formatting solved readability.



Navigation solved productivity.



They're related, but they're not the same thing.



Final Thoughts



Formatting JSON is often the first step.



But for large payloads, it's rarely the last step.



As APIs become more complex and responses grow larger, navigation becomes just as important as formatting.
